I have had a handful of people reach out to me in recent months about how they’ve been interested in starting a blog. Usually, the first thing they ask is how I start with making a website/blog design? I have to admit….as much as I have tried to learn even the littlest bit of coding or html/web design…there is no possible way I could build this website on my own. Coding for the most part….blows my freaking mind! And frankly, I don’t have time to learn it or learn it enough to trust myself with my own blog! Over the years I have hired much much more tech savvy friends to do it for me. Wanda with Kingdom Advantrix initially helped me cross over from a blogger theme to a wordpress theme and since then I have had Melanie with Melanie Anne Creative help me with updates and other blog changes and adjustments I’ve wanted to do since then. So if I was freaking out because let’s say…all of a sudden something went crazy with my blog…I would just send a quick email to Melanie and she would save my blogs life and fix what ever it was that was happening. That has to be one of the greatest things about working with Melanie, she is SUPER quick at responding to my emails…if not within an hour or two…at least within 24 hours! Which in blog land is important…because if a part of your blog or website doesn’t work…then it can be annoying and frustrating for your readers!

– Tell my readers a little bit about how you got started doing web development work?
I originally started designing my own websites and blogs when I was a teenager in high school. I always had a strong interest in digital design, and absolutely loved giving my blog a “facelift” every so often (more than I liked actually blogging!). I had a beauty blog that had a few followers, and a couple asked me to help them with their blog designs as they loved mine. I charged a small fee, and they referred me to other people, and it just grew from that point on.
– What do you enjoy most about it?
I love being able to bring out a blogger’s unique sense of style and personality within their design!
– If you had advice to give to someone who is looking to start a blog what would you suggest in term of web hosting/development/layout etc?
If you’re serious about blogging, I’d highly suggest starting out with a self-hosted WordPress blog right off the bat. A couple of my favorite hosting companies are Bluehost and A Small Orange, as they have fairly inexpensive options and great customer service. You will also need to register a domain name. If you don’t yet want to invest in a self-hosted blog just yet, I would suggest starting one with Blogger.com or WordPress.com, WordPress’s free service. Keep in mind that if you are looking for a custom design, Blogger would be the better option as WordPress.com does not allow a lot of customization. As far as layout, this is entirely based on your own preference. There are some blogs that work with fairly complex layouts (post excerpts, sliders, etc) which are usually self-hosted WordPress, and some that are perfectly fine with a simple chronological list.
If you will be working with a blog designer for the first time, I have a great ebook that will provide you with helpful tips such as information on the most common layouts, font types, best ways to provide feedback to a designer, etc! – What makes a REALLY good website or blog? In your opinion.
In general, I love really simple designs that have something special to them – whether its a pop of color, glitter, or some understated graphics. I also personally love blogs that have really lovely photos as it can take a simple design and make it look like something completely different. Kind of like having some awesome accessories or a fun jacket layered on top of a basic outfit J
– What should bloggers stay away from when it comes to running a blog and the whole layout/design?
With both running a blog and the design, I would suggest staying away from overloading your visitors with too much – whether it be too many plugins, or just too much loudness going on with your design. Also, keep in mind the file size of your photos, especially if you have a self-hosted WordPress blog. Uploading photos directly from a high resolution camera can eat away at your storage space very quickly and also cause slower loading times on your website.
